MY REVIEW

Once again this author has done an amazing job with her latest gangland crime thriller. This one was so addictive that I read it in one sitting, it then took me several hours to digest the finale! Definitely did not see that coming!

Diamond Geezer is a story that has a rather large mystery to it. Set in Glasgow on a run-down estate where gangs rule and drugs are rife. There are gangs trying to encroach onto one particular area, it is controlled by The Undertaker. No one knows who he or she is, but they know that you don’t mess with this person or you will end up dead.

The author has woven together with a few threads and gradually led me on a journey up and down the country, but with the main focus being on Glasgow and the residents on the estate. The synopsis did a brilliant job of setting the scene, but to be honest I didn’t read it until I started writing this review. Yes, I have read several of this author’s books and I will automatically read them.

I really liked how the author set up the characters in Glasgow, while they are all individuals and look out for themselves, there is a sense of community spirit and also of respect. The intriguing premise of who The Undertaker is, how his businesses are run and the day to day management is well laid out.

There is a sense of danger on this estate, but also of people looking out for each other. With rival gangs around, there is going to be trouble, yes there will be murder and there will be something unexpected.

This was a brilliant book and I think it is my favourite to date. The author wove a story of family, secrets, crime, suspicion and a huge amount of intrigue. This was such a great read and one that had me hooked and then the final couple of chapters… speechless… in a good way!

This is a dark gangland crime thriller with many surprises, some shocks and also a sense of community. Brilliant reading and one I would definitely recommend.

Takeover by Edie Baylis @ediebaylis @rararesources @BoldwoodBooks #boldwoodbloggers #crime #gangland #thriller #bookreview

I am delighted to share my review today for Takeover by Edie Baylis. This is the first time I have read a book by this author and I am so glad there are plenty more for me to read.

My huge thanks to Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for my spot on the Blog Tour and for arranging my e-copy of this fabulous book.

And Seb will stop at nothing to ensure that in this takeover, only one will succeed.

A gripping new gangland story perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Heather Atkinson and Caz Finlay.

MY REVIEW

Wow-what a brilliant introduction to this author Takeover was. I am delighted to see there are other books for me to catch up on.

This is a gangland crime and I adored it from start to finish. There is a brief intro before speeding forward 30 years as Samantha gets ready for her Birthday at her fathers’ casino. Samantha is sort of aware that there are things about his business she does really know about, but her focus is on building her own career as a graphic designer.

As the synopsis suggests, she is definitely plunged in at the deep end and has to learn the ropes fast when she unexpectedly finds herself at the helm of her fathers business. She does have support, but it is up to her to find out who she can trust!

This is where the author did an amazing job of not only throwing a wonderful twist in the early stages but also delivering a great deal of intrigue and mistrust from the first few chapters. Being a gangland story there is more than one family in the area, so there are a few characters to get to know as well as the hangers-on. I do think the author has kept the main players to the key roles and has other loitering with intent around the edges.

Family is key in these Birmingham based businesses, but when things start to get tough then it is those that are close to you who can know which buttons to press. With family tensions and also areas being taken over the intensity does build.

As this is my first time with this author I was interested to see different elements in her story, the intensity is not only within the thriller side of the story but also in a rather tasty romantic side. Something I wasn’t expecting but it definitely added another edge.

I adored this story a lot and if you like hard-hitting, gangland, crime thrillers then this will be one for you to look out for. I am so glad I read this one and it gives me another author to add to my list. Takeover is a book I would definitely recommend.

MY REVIEW

The author really is injecting some interesting and dangerous characters into this series. This is a brilliant gangland crime series that is great for those who like a grittier thriller read.

The family concerned is the Glass family, brother Luke took over from his ruthless brother Danny. The sisters have an interest in the legitimate side of the business and while they don’t necessarily get on, they are family.

When Nina is caught up in a robbery it is a mystery for the rest of the family to work out why, where and what on earth the robbery had to do with Nina. To say tempers are short and volatile is the understatement of the year as those closest to Nina are trying to act as if all is normal. They still have a business and also a reputation to keep going.

I really like how this series is evolving with new and interesting characters, I say interesting because you are never quite sure how the author’s characters are going to react or behave. Some are downright narcissistic, others seem ok and others have the subtle art of deception down to a tee.

Using one of the main characters the way he has with Nina, the author has upped the stakes on the family. Putting Nina and the family in a vulnerable situation has made it possible to see more of their individual characteristics and traits. It also allows the reader a glimpse into how well they control their tempers and emotions. Quite an eye-opener for anyone who is following the series.

As this is very much a gangland crime thriller then you do expect a different level of brutality. There is a fine line between giving enough as far as descriptions go or too much. Thankfully the author knows how to walk this line without crossing it. Descriptions give enough for the reader’s mind to add what is not mentioned!

This is an addictive series and yes I do think it needs to be read in order so you get to know the characters and why they are as they are. This is one for readers who enjoy a more brutal, gritty hardcore crime thriller read and this latest book in the series is one I would definitely recommend.

Sapphire by Heather Burnside @heatherbwriter @AriesFiction #NetGalley #crime #thriller

I am delighted to share my review today for Sapphire by Heather Burnside. This is a gangland crime thriller and part of The Working Girls series, but this book can be read as a stand-alone.

My huge thanks to Andrew Knowles for getting in touch regarding this Aries Fiction publication via NetGalley.

TWO SISTERS ALONE.

Sophie and Kelsey have always had each other. When their mum is diagnosed with cancer and their dad fails to step up, they’re forced to move into the care system. But Sophie knows they’ll be okay as long as she’s there to protect her sister.

ONE FINAL CHANCE.

But when Kelsey is found a foster family and Sophie can’t join her, Sophie’s left in an unsafe situation in the home, forced to do things against her will. Finding her own foster family feels like a relief, but it’s short-lived when her trust in her new foster parents is betrayed.

NO GOING BACK.

With nowhere to turn, Sophie finds herself homeless. But when she finds her new street family, Sophie joins the working girls and her new identity as Sapphire is complete. It’s a hard life working the streets, especially when those around her look to take advantage, but can the dream of one day finding Kelsey keep her going?

MY REVIEW

This is an author who is new to me and so I was intrigued when I saw this book. Even though it is part of a series it is one that can be read as a stand-alone.

Sapphire is the name of Sophie, older sister to Kelsey. Life goes from bad to worse for the pair when their mother dies and their father wants nothing to do with them as he has a new family. The girl’s des[erately want to remain together but it is hard to find places for teens, so when Kelsey is offered a place with a foster family Sophie lets her go.

As the story continues life for Sophie doesn’t go the way it did for her sister, the two slowly drift. The point where Sophie becomes Sapphire is further in the story. It is a heartbreaking story and one that was tough to read. Unfortunately, it is one that could very easily be true. It is the story of how a teen finds herself alone, on the streets and homeless.

The author has given a very harrowing account of Sapphire and her experiences, the hardships the dangers and the addictions. It is one way of showing how living in a nice warm and comfy home can go wrong and that all the things that follow are a downward spiral.

The author takes the reader into a world of poverty, drugs, destitution, prostitution and death. It is not a pretty world or a nice one to read about. All the while I thought this is how easy it could be if you are completely alone and think you have no choices or options. It does have a grim reality to it.

This is a gangland styler crime thriller, it is brutal and does explore various aspects of homelessness and living as best you can. It is quite an addictive read and one I found very difficult to put down. It is one I would recommend.

MY REVIEW

If you are looking for a gangland crime thriller read then you really need to have a look at this book from Kerry Kaya. It has a very addictive brutal side as well as being very twisted.

Fletch has just been released from prison after 22 years. He is estranged from his son Austen and Daughter Kit, people have moved on and there are only a small few that Fletch can trust. Given his volatile nature, those closest to him are very nervous about telling the full details of what has occurred over the years.

Fletch is eager to get back in touch with his children, but they have moved on, he is a stranger to them, and they lead their own lives. Austen is an act now deal with the consequences later type of guy. This time however he has pushed his luck too far and a cat and mouse game ensues. Rather than keeping his head and dealing with the consequences, he relies on others to help him out.

The author has created such a fabulous storyline with some amazing characters, none of which are particularly nice or trustworthy for that matter. I liked the way the author laid this story out, introducing certain characters, allowing me to get to know them and then she threw in a twist. These were fabulous twists and kept me on my toes, it also meant the story keeps evolving in an almost real-time feel.

This is a gangland crime, therefore the details can be a little bit toe-curling at times. The language is in keeping with the genre, so do expect some heated exchanges between characters. This story is one of family and loyalty, of respect and trust and about trying to build familial bonds. It is an emotional roller coaster of a story and one that had me hooked from the very first page. A fabulous story that will appeal to readers who like a grittier gangland, crime thriller read and it is one I would definitely recommend.

MY REVIEW

I read the first book in this series, Gold Digger, earlier this year and I loved it. While it did take me a few pages to get back up to speed with the main characters, I soon found myself immersed in the shady world of Ralph Gold and Julie.

Ralph has made the commitment and asked Julie to marry him. If you have read the first book you will know the background to these two characters, neither has had the best of life but they are gradually getting there. Let us say they are not exactly legit and in some ways, it adds to the appeal of the characters given their backgrounds. The author has taken two characters, thrown enough bad stuff at them, and yet they have found each other and are planning for the future.

Ther plans involve Julie organising a wedding, setting up legit business premises and also working with Ralph and also taking part in a heist that is due to happen just before they get married. Yes, just a normal day for this couple!

This was such a welcome return to two fabulous characters and I adored getting back up to speed with them. Ralph has a more influential role with his Italian crime boss. There is a lot of respect between them, but there is something that is being held back. While Ralph trusts Don Carlos completely, Julie is still in the getting to know his stage, and like most people, she doesn’t completely trust him. Especially when he holds the reins for this latest huge job that could set the Golds up for life.

I do like the contrast between Ralph and Julie, she is bold, brassy, opinionated and I think she is brilliant. Ralph is more dark and brooding, but together they make a glamourous couple. Weaving the elements of their past stories in with their current and future lives makes for a very addictive read.

This is one that like a gangland thriller story, there is some humour between the characters and also some dodgy characters. It is not an overly dark story, but there are obvious dark moments. It is twisted and just a great read. With a bit of a teaser for the next book. It is one I would definitely recommend.

Money talks…

And blonde bombshell Julie isn’t afraid to ask for what she wants. With her mother locked up for murder, all Julie cares about is protecting her younger sister, Frankie. But penniless and alone on the streets of Liverpool, Julie realises that there’s only one sure fire way to make cash fast – the oldest trade.

The men mean nothing to Julie, until she meets Ralph Goldstein, an ex-con who’ll do whatever it takes to make his way to top. And the only man Julie can trust.

Separately, Ralph and Julie’s lives are filled with risk and danger. But when they meet, their blend of personality and ambition could be the best thing that ever happened … or the worst.

Will their pasts be their downfall, or will they make it big…together?

A brilliantly dark and gritty story about one woman’s fight for survival. Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Caz Finlay and Heather Atkinson.

My Review…

this is the first time I have read a book by this author and I am looking forward to reading more by this author. This book was p[previously published as Gold.

The synopsis gives a good idea about who Julie is, and how she is very protective of her sister. The run-up to why Julie takes to the trade she does is told early on in the book. In fact, that opening was an indication as to how gritty this author writes.

Ralph, now he was a bit of a dark horse. With a criminal record, I soon realised that he is not squeaky clean, he and his friend Paddy have ambitions. What I did see was several sides to Ralph, hardworking, loyal and with an edge to him.

The book alternates between Julie and Ralph. They are completely unknown to each other, For a good part of the book, I got to know each of the characters. An important journey as it gave a good idea of their backgrounds and why they have chosen the routes in life they have. It is past the halfway point when things start to slide.

As the synopsis indicates, the two do meet. The combination of the two makes for a great team. They do have a ruthlessness to them it is a story of two people who have both suffered.

This is one for those who like a grittier, urban setting story. One that involves criminals and various criminal acts, it is after all a gangland crime thriller. It is also one I read in one day, once I started I found it really difficult to put down. Thoroughly enjoyed this, the two main characters are excellent and the story totally addictive. I would definitely recommend this one.

My Review…

This is the first time I have read a book by this author and I absolutely loved it. The author starts her story in the past in the first chapter, it sets the scene for what is to follow. What followed was an addictive one sitting read for me as I followed the brothers of Fletch and Spence, they work for local gangland boss Billy.

I really liked how the author focused on the relationship of the brothers rather than violence in this story, although the main focus is Fletch. He has a bit more savvy and has more front to him. Although there are mentions of violence, it wasn’t that brutal in the reading.

The brothers are loyal to each other and their Mum, things in the past were tough and it is now that things seem to be working out. Only thing with being part of a gang is that there is always another gang that wants to make a move.

The story took various turns that I found really intriguing, not just a straight forward rival gangs read, but something with much more heart and human interest to it. Getting to know the brothers through the story was a good way to make a reader kind of connect to them, but even though I really liked them there was always that air of danger about them.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this story, a brilliant read that wasn’t what I expected and I found it really hard to put down. I think this book would suit various readers, especially those that want a crime read that has a slightly different angle top it. I am looking forward to reading some of the previous books by this author, and as for this book, well I would definitely recommend it.

Page-turning, gripping, gritty, Insider is perfect for fans of Martina Cole, Kimberley Chambers and Mandasue Heller.

Purchase Link – HERE

My Review…

I loved the first book in this series and this second book Insider continues the story of the Glass family. This is where I do recommend reading the first book, not only because there are details that help the relationships in the second book. And also because it is a brilliant read.

Danny Glass is gone, Luke Glass is now running the family business and Nina Glass is running her real estate business. Things seem to be going well until there are two robberies and a third on the LBC club. The club is the centre of the business, it is Luke’s baby and he feels this as an attack on him and his family. Good job that there is a security guard there who knows his business.

The author once again hit the reader with an amazing high impact crime thriller read. The Glass family are not, well, they’re not quite legitimate, actually, they are a lot not legitimate! But there is something quite likeable about them. I think it is the way the author portrays the importance of family. They never had the best childhood but they did what they did and it is the reason they are where they are today.

The author introduces some new characters, this keeps the storyline fresh and gives more for the reader to think about. Being a series that revolves around a crime family you know that there is going to be a large amount of mistrust. Adding new characters is enough to keep the reader kind of on the fence as they try to work out why the new characters are there.

This is a fabulous read and one that I adored from the very bringing to the end. Many twists and second-guessing moments, there are red-herrings as the author toys with the reader. The questions that start to build are eventually answered, the doubts are put to rest but there is something lingering on the horizon for the family and it has left me so eager to see what happens next.

This is one for readers who like gritty, gangland crime thrillers read. It is addictive, fast-paced and an absolute hard hitter. An excellent second book in this series and one I would definitely recommend.

Even perfect mothers have secrets…

Leah. She’s the perfect mum to ten-year-old Samuel, wife to loving husband Thomas, head of the PTA. But her closet is full of skeletons – and if the truth gets out, her world could be destroyed.

Annie. She’s the gangster’s moll with a brain. She might be a woman, but she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty to play the men at their own game. But what no one knows is the devastating secret haunting her.

Terry. He’s the king of Glasgow gangland, working his way up from estate to mansion. From drugs to guns, there’s nothing he won’t stop at to grow his dirty money. He might be a hard man, but his weakness is women.

As their three stories collide, the lives of each will never be the same. Because even perfect women hide dark secrets… Don’t they?

My Review…

This is a fabulous crime thriller story that involves three main characters as well as a handful of secondary ones. The story revolves around the gangland scene in an area in Glasgow. An area where drugs are rife and lives are not lived, people just exist.

The author has woven such a brilliant story that focuses on Leah, a mother who has a secret that she is desperate to keep hidden from her son and husband. Annie has stepped away from her life and into that of the girlfriend of gangland crime boss Terry. Terry is the third main character, the boss who is not averse to breaking the law to maintain control of his area.

This is such an addictive read as I was drawn further into the three storylines. Throughout the story, I was taken into the murk and grime of an inner-city housing estate. The author built a picture of deprivation and drug addiction. There is one however who has seen what drugs do and steers clear of using and wants a better life.

Using to of the characters, the author has injected a secretive edge, it is one that kept me so intrigued as I desperately wanted to work out the connection. When that was eventually dropped I was shocked. Definitely a “I never saw that coming” moment.

I really enjoyed how quickly I was taken into the lives and the story. It is gritty as I was taken into the drug world from both the user and the dealer. As well as those who are involved through association. The stories are brilliantly worked and had a tense filled edge to them. A fabulous story from start to finish and it is one for those who love their crime thrillers on the dark and gritty side. I would definitely recommend it.
